Sunday was our day to bid goodbye to Zion and make our way to Bryce, UT. It's not a terribly exciting day from a photographic perspective, and in fact the shots I'll share here are nothing to write home about (but ha! isn't that what I'm doing??). However, I've come to appreciate these day-by-day recaps, as have Brian and the kids. Evan, in particular, likes to wake each morning and read the latest post first thing. He's very much a "categorize and organize" kind of guy, and I think he likes my little synopses and reliving the trip memories in a methodical fashion.
Since this day didn't result in a ton of quality photos, I'll start by sharing a handful from the night before (post-Super Soaker battle). After changing into dry duds, Noah entertained us with his newly aquired hula hooping skills. I don't know where in the world he learned to do it, but the kid is actually quite good.
Then, as I mentioned previously, we enjoyed a spaghetti dinner en plein air.
Sunday morning, the kids bowled me over with their cuteness and engaged in some sibling "bondage." (Don't freak out; that's an old Cutler family joke... one of my brothers used the term when he meant to say "bonding.") The boys even spent time introducing Foxy to Captain Underpants and encouraging her to begin reading on her own. They helped her pick out easy sight words and showed her how to start sounding out words. She was actually quite inspired and has spent a great deal of time with these books in the last couple of days.
As we rolled out, I tried once again to capture the beauty of Zion in pictures. Sigh... That goal continued to be elusive.
What's crazy is that as soon as you wind your way out of Zion, the landscape goes KAPOW!! and turns into this:
During our drive, we pumped many tunes. Miss Flannery is very into pop music these days, and when her favorite songs came on, she broke out in some serious car (RV) boogie moves. I have dozens of shots like this:
Whenever Noah got a chance, he liked to scamper up to his crow's nest above the driver's seat. Then he would pop his head down and I'd get to see his upside-down mug:
The drive to Bryce actually passed pretty quickly, and we got to our campsite by early afternoon. We walked the grounds a bit, started some laundry, and checked out the general store. The kids were itching to fire up another few rounds of Uno and take a dip in the pool, so we spent the rest of the afternoon doing both.
(Fox was having a hard time keeping her Uno cards fanned -- or shuffled, as she'd say -- so she resorted to playing like this. It made her turns seem extra long... She also had a funny propensity to yell out "Tengo yo!" every time she made a good play. We have zero idea what that's about.)
Later, we made dinner and sat around the campsite. At some point, we realized that we were short on supplies for s'mores, so we asked the boys if they'd ride their bikes over to the General Store and pick up some for us. They did, and as soon as they returned they asked if we needed them to go back for anything else. We came up with another need, and they filled it. Then Foxy wanted to go. So we gave them a few dollars for some Gatorades. They went and bought those. Then they reported that they'd seen excellent options for anniversary gifts for us, so could they have a few more dollars? We asked exactly how much they needed, which meant another trip to the store. And so on and so on. Altogether, I think they made at least a half-dozen round trips to the General Store.
And that was Sunday. The next day we hopped the shuttle and ventured into Bryce Canyon, so that's what you'll get with tomorrow's post. :)
